it is now our duty to completely drain you

Through my random web-surfing, I stumbled upon this gem earlier today:

Nirvana Live At Reading Set Due In November

Now, my initial reaction would have normally been joy, considering live Nirvana is always good, especially considering this was the famous show where Kurt Cobain was wheeled out in a backless gown and wheelchair to spoof rumours of his addictions and impending death (which sadly, turned out to be true not two years after).

But my first reaction was more that of an irritated groan, the same sort of sound you make when you hear more in the news about Orly Taitz, or realize this awesome movie you're watching just introduced Andy Dick as a lead character. Something like that.

While my initial grumblings just sort of thought "another Nirvana album? Kurt did die, right?", I realized after that the album's release date, November 2, seemed sort of cryptic. Having spent two years in university working at record stores as a Christmas temp, I remember Nirvana releases always coming out right around Christmas, more as a quick cash-grab for Courtney Love and Geffen than anything else.

Sounds crazy, no? I mean, how could the batshit-crazy widow and the conglomerate record company want to greedily make money? Isn't it all about the music?

But wouldn't you know it, I was on to something! Let's look back at the last 7 years of Nirvana's discography, all releases that have come out since the epic From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah came out two years after Kurt's death:

- Nirvana (greatest hits album): Oct. 29, 2002
- With The Lights Out (box set): Nov 23, 2004
- Sliver: Best Of The Box (greatest hits album...of the above box set): Nov. 1, 2005
- Live! Tonight! Sold Out! (live DVD): Nov. 7, 2006
- Unplugged In New York (live DVD): Nov. 20, 2007
- Live At Reading (live CD/DVD): Nov. 3, 2009

So since Courtney Love won the "War of You Know You're Right" over Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, there have been six new Nirvana releases in the past seven years since the floodgates to the Nirvana collection were opened, all released within two months of Christmas. Yeah, it's definitely all about the music...you'd think Kurt Cobain was 2Pac or Biggie, all this material coming to light only, oh, 15 years since he died!

Of course, being a huge fan of Nirvana's since I was in the sixth grade, this is a real piss-off, besides the fact that Courtney Love stands to gain from all these releases...and I believe in my heart that besides being a psycho junkie, she definitely had something to do with Kurt's death.

Conspiracy theories aside, however, it is becoming all too transparent now that these releases are merely just to top up Frances Bean's trust fund, and whatever new habit our friend Courtney is on now...outside of more live albums or a cover album, it is hard to fathom what Love and Co. can come up with for Christmas 2010...isn't it about due time for the Nirvana Christmas album, people??
